Tips for getting your avatar under 6KB....

image > mode > indexed...
click generate optimum palette and set to 256.
make sure you export as jpeg.
uncheck "save xmp data" and "save save IPTC data" (not sure if this make a huge difference).
still too big then play with the quality slider.
